If you grew up in Omaha, there's a good chance someone in your family remembers Alamito milk on the doorstep. For most of the 20th century, that milk came from right here, at 27th and Leavenworth.

Today the same block is home to Oxworth Apartments, a new community of studios, one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms in Midtown Omaha. We built it around what was left of the dairy, and we think the history is the best part of living here. So here's the story.

A dairy named after a racehorse

Alamito started in 1894 as a stock farm out west of town, near what's now 108th and West Dodge. It was named after a famous trotting stallion, which makes it the only Omaha dairy we know of with a racehorse for a namesake.

By 1902 it was the Alamito Dairy, often called the city's first modern milk producer and distributor. Milk went out on horse-drawn wagons, route by route. In 1914 the company built its permanent home at 2601 Leavenworth Street, a three-story concrete plant that anchored the block for more than 60 years.

What we kept

One piece of the dairy was still standing when construction started: the old cold storage building, more than a century old. In recent years it had been an upholstery shop. We kept it, and it's now the Oxworth clubhouse.

That's where you'll find the Ox Bar, the lounge, the fitness center and the sauna. The original brick is still on the walls. It's a working part of the building that residents use every day.

The ground had a few more surprises. While digging out the old foundations, crews ran into tunnels that weren't on any building record, a full brick foundation, and a vault full of intact Alamito ice cream bottle lids.

Even the name comes from the site. The ox is a close cousin of the dairy cow, and "worth" comes from Leavenworth, the street the dairy called home for 63 years.

What's new

Next to the old building is a brand-new one. Oxworth has studios, one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms ranging from 445 to 1,216 square feet. Every apartment has an in-unit washer and dryer, quartz counters, stainless appliances, high ceilings and big closets. Many have a patio or balcony.
